It was brought up on the Phone-in with a number of people complaining - I'm thinking of writing a blog post on whether the St Helier hustings should be moved to a larger venue in future (such as Fort Regent or the Opera House).
What do you guys think of that idea? I couldn't go as I have small children but it sounds like there just wasn't enough room in the Assembly Room.
Oh and as ALL our reporters will be working over night on polling day and some have already built up a fair amount of lieu time from the hustings we did broadcast (St Brelade and St Saviour) there wasn't anyone to send.
I might write up some of what was said on the phone-in and then link to discussions on this and Planet Jersey message board though.

I've just spoken to my opposite number in Guernsey and he said that they did much the same thing in Guernsey and now they struggle to fill the larger venue.

I have to hand it to the JEP (free copy), they have done a great job of covering last night's hustings. They certainly filled the gap that other media institutions left wide open.

To be honest I think we probably should have broadcast St Helier live over St Saviour or St Brelade - but that's just my own personal opinion and not the BBCs. Still you can listen to the St Saviour hustings here www.bbc.co.uk/jersey/the_states/election/blog/2008/10/stsaviour.shtmlAnd I have now written a kind of report (link above) on the St Helier hustings.

Thanks to Ryan for all his hard work ,much appreciated .Can't be easy job ,given people's feeling about bias in Jersey media.
Let's hope for some great Sunday morning phone in s.The best show of the week in my humble opinion.
How would a programme like BBC question time go down?Live audience with several politicians, chaired by a person that is respected by the majority of folks out there. Bit like the St Helier hustings . Few real chances to hear politicians speak. Most people are in work to attend States Chambers. If politicians talk of openess, they would have no problem with this idea.
Love Professor Adrian Lee,can we more of him please.Makes politics so much interesting with his terrific knowledge and insight. Can we take it you are having a break this weekend ?

Article in todays JEP editorial "Unwelcome trends in politics" regarding use of emails and online forums with regard to politics, and the changing nature as a result of the Internet. Can be viewed on their online version ,if you do not subscribe to printed format. www.thisisjersey.com/2008/10/20/unwelcome-trends-in-politics/I know some of our forums members do not buy it any more I know they have a vested interest in protecting the monopoly of news in the Island.but is there any truth in this article, has it changed for worse, since local blogging Any thoughts on this ?

Apparently, someone will eventually get the hump and writs will fly! So what's new? If something's defamatory or libellous and action is advisable, then it's no different online to anything in any other form of publishing. Where exactly are all these scandalous comments, apart from the named names on the SSS blog?
Or does it also include the fair-game satire as was featured on the defunct another blog blog too, because they can't handle a little bit of lampooning of the sort that mainland politicians have shrugged off for centuries?

My mother is complaining that her BBC 2 is missing (from the town transmitter), same fault as a friend of mine reported yesterday. I gave up trying to talk her through changing channel on the Sky box so she could watch it from there. It's like pulling teeth trying to explain each button press and figure out what happened. We gave up at the point where it says 1 1 0 U K G O L D in a box on the screen but the channel down button didn't do anything ..... "on which remote?" "it's got a red light on it now" Scream!! Anyhow, does anyone know if the BBC have mentioned anything on the radio about how long it's likely to be out of action? Or have they started the digital switchover already?! Ryan? ;D ta.

Ryan. if you're in a question answering mood could you tell me now Stuart Syvret has mentioned Mario Lundy by name in the States sitting and it was broadcast live on BBC radio Jersey, will the BBC be following up any kind of a story on it?
Or are the funds and resources a bit low now after sending journalists to go and report on cricket and tennis matches?

So the Jersey media strikes again. A chief officer is alleged to be under investigation for serious violent child abuse. Not just any chief officer but the director of our education department who is entrusted with the "care" of school children.
An elected Senator, during a states sitting, NAMES HIM and our media say nothing about it? Are all our local media under funded or resourced?
It could look like they are under something and I don't think it's got anything to do with funding and resources.
Journalists by their very nature are inquisitive creatures, surely Ryan, you being an intelligent man and journalist must see that something around here stinks? Why isn't this headline news? do you not think every parent on this island has the right to know this news?

Ryan
It is what the media in general don’t find necessary to report on that is getting up everyone’s nose.
Talkback is a typical example, Bridget gets unlimited airtime, unlike many others she never has a problem getting on air, and she is completely up the establishment’s rear end, yet some people are banned before they even speak irrespective of what they may or may not say, and the bias in favour of the establishment doesn’t half show to anyone who is listening.
Now I believe that we have some good journalists in the island, and I actually feel sorry for them, their hands are tied and I honestly believe they are not being allowed to do their job properly by the powers that be, end of. Let’s face it how long would they keep their licences if they did a proper job? Not long I’d wager.
Freedom of speech and choice on this island just don’t exist, some of my friends who are journalists have told me off the record that they don’t like the situation, but what can they do about it? (Don’t bother asking who because I do keep confidences.)
What they could do is come clean and report it themselves to the international media, but they would lose their jobs and possibly have to leave the island. I wonder if one or two of them might eventually go renegade on what is happening here, after all I expect some parts of the media out of island would pay a fortune for a scoop like that?

The media can't upset the general public with the truth. We are kept in a life enriching bubble over here. If you're only source of news was the local media you wouldn't really be aware of anything to do with child abuse over here. To me all news is news, unfortunately bad news is not what those in charge want in Jersey. I find the BBC very biased towards the establishment, no one with anti-establishments views is given much time. Bridget the self appointed government spin doctor is allowed on every show to put forward her views on her idols. Roger Barra seems quite happy to allow her to waffle on about how marvellous things are over here. I suggest the BBC get some reporters out on the streets and quiz people about what they think about Jersey. However I know you wouldn't be able to let most of these comments on the BBC as they would be too anti-establishment and would led to certain people getting "upset".
The JEP are just as bad but they have a reason as they have been controlled by Mr.Walker for many years and I believe he still has influence over them now, even though he no longer owns the paper. I find their reports of events very blinkered it is all wishy washy stuff not much real meaty stuff at all. They appear to be blind to much of what has been happening over here for many years.
I believe you could have a tidal wave hit Jersey and nearly wipe it out but still the local media would be all spin about a minor event, but no need to worry you can all keep working. This whole thing reminds me of the Vietnam war and a US General with his famous quote of "minor collateral damage".
This was in answer to a journalists' question about a village being wiped out by US troops. The whole place had been napalmed and bombed no one was alive and no building were left standing! As you can see nothing changes.

Howard League report out, Graham Power suspended, Lenny Harper's investigation being rubbished, oh and Jersey sending a bobsleigh team out to foriegn shores. Looks like Roger Barra will have to start packing again, what do you reckon Matthew Price or Denzil Dudley? You did ask them to come on here and answer any questions didn't you Ryan?
