For some reason I've just remembered about the madcap plan that was once mooted about building a new airport for Jersey on reclaimed land somewhere out to sea (I think it was going to be off Green Island). I just thought, with things like the recent 'Bridge to France' plan, what do you think is the craziest idea anybody has ever publicly had for this island? (It might even be something that became reality)

The steam clock has to be high on the list surely?

It's funny to think that once upon a time the steam clock caused so much fuss, it was the most controversial issue of the day. Now it seems a rather quaint footnote in the Big Book of States Mistakes....

I know this is a long way back, but in the 1920s the States were seriously considering demolishing Gorey Castle. It had only just come into their possession from the crown and it was in such a neglected state that pulling it down seemed like a good idea at the time!
That airport scheme was put forward by a Deputy i think. It involved reclaiming all the tidal reefs around Seymour Tower. Mad! The vacant airfield site at St.Peter's would have been housing.

I was thinking if the States wanted to revisit that crazy airport scheme it might be a good way to dispose of all the nasty ash that will be coming their way when the new incinerator gets built. Just ship it round the coast a bit, dump it and build an airport on top.

Or start an artificial island on virgin seabed somewhere out La Rocque (leaving the "moonscape" of the rocks alone in the tidal region), as the first stepping stone for a future bridge!

Here's a current crazy idea : move the harbour down to La Collette and build 900 houses at the present ferry terminal! I heard this on the witless (or do I mean wireless?) this morning. What an abso-freakin-lutely bonkers proposal!

Said airport, in the midst of the Channel Island's first Ramsar Wetland of International Importance (designated 2000), was in fact proposed by the current President of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Conservation clearly means different things to different folks. Pleased to be here... Merci bien! VStA

Errrmmm?? Now I love the sea and our coastline, but I thought that the area off Green Island would of been a good site for the airport. There would of been many advantages.

this idea has come up before a lot of people thought it a bonkers plan to put the new incinerator there and the fuel farm watch this space

apparently there will have to be an emergency access road from the slipway at the end of Green St (bottom of Mt Bingham). Bang goes the nice peaceful coastal prom walk there then! These monkeybrained politicians need to be removed from power A S A P !!!

Oh I don't know it may not be as bad as you imagine. The promenade isn't wide enough for emergency vehicles...they'll probably just reclaim a slice of beach next to it.....

What about building a brand new children's home, with soundproof cellars.
