With the sale of all the former Ann Street pubs to a new company, what do you think the future holds for the pubs in Jersey? Investment or real estate?

No point running pubs or corner shops any more when the land+buildings can be sold for such massive amounts.
The whole island will be just end up a large residential area with one large superstore able to turn over enough profit to make its land use worthwhile!

You've hit the nail on the head. The licensing trade isn't the profitable business it once was, so redevelopment is the most proiftable route for any buyer....especially in the island's current climate, with the average house price fast pushing toward half a million quid.
And though it may sound a bit extreme that the island will become one large residential area, it's probably not far from the truth. Over just the past few years we've already seen a number of out of town pubs closed and turned into housing. Numerous hotels and guest houses have gone the same way. So already some areas have become purely residential.
It's an incredibly sad state of affairs, and reveals a complete lack of foresight from the States, who should be able to see why the continuation of that trend is a bad thing. We're going to end up with there being nothing outside of St.Helier apart from houses and the occasional branch of Spar. When the Finance industry collapses (which one day it will) it's going to be fun trying to rebuild a tourist industry on the island's redeveloped residential blueprint...

Christ!!! I never had that image of Jersey in my mind's eye before. What an ugly sight.
Where did this greed come from? A blinding lust for money. The COM led us to believe that it was for the benefit of us all. Can they not hear our voices any more? "IT STINKS"
What is their vision for our future?

Can anyone suggest what (however small) action I can take about the rStore closing at Maufant?
rStores and Pickwicks are run by CIN (C.I. Newsagents Ltd), owned by the Guiton Group (who also own the JEP and Itex).
I can't very well boycott rStores because if everyone did that, even more convenience stores would close! And I don't wish to boycott the JEP because I'm addicted to news, and nothing else provides all those little details that I'd miss otherwise. So what can I do?

I have heard the CO-OP is interested in using the site. It true, you will be better off as R Stores are not exactly cheap

No point running pubs or corner shops any more when the land+buildings can be sold for such massive amounts. Not quite all the former Ann Street pubs have been sold to a new company... Anyone else notice the properties that were retained personally by Tom Scott when CI Traders changed hands. From what I remember (and I can't find/can't be bothered to find the full list) it certainly included the Cosmopolitan (hence the recent change of management there) and the Thomson Antiques/Physique 2000 site on Kensington Place, Traders on the Weighbridge and, also, I believe but I am not certain about the Customs, the So bar and the Southampton. There were a few other properties elsewhere in the island that I can't remember but there is obviously a pattern to holding to holding on to these, someone with a vested interest in redevelopment on the Esplanade. Dear old Tom! Gone but not forgotten!!

SO Bar is, I believe Randalls as is Customs OK... I said that I wasn't certain but I think that Tom has retained in his pocket a significant enough tranche (a word I meant to use in my last post but I forgot) of properties in the area to justify a significant interest in redevelopment in the area. Imagine the value of a new office block on the Esplanade/Kensington Place corner if it's adjacent to a new 'financial district'... Probably worth a bit more than running a gay nightcub.

Wonder what Sandpiper will sell next?
I reckon their wholesale food operation cimandis.
Don't bet against Checkers being sold either.
