Most of us will have read todays announcement of the reciprocal arrangements with the UK over Health care. Link attached courtesy of the JEP. there are so many implications of this,to anyone who has to visit the mainland . In effect we all have to take out private insurance, even if we are going on a day trip to London to see a concert etc .School children going on a trip to see the sights of London will all need to be covered . Sport teams competing in UK events. Having to attend a course on mainland etc etc My worry is that those people who have some medical history ,might find it very prohibitive to get insured, even if if an Insurance company is willing to consider taking them on with a very high premium. Those that have pre-existing conditions of heart disease, cancer scares, diabetes or any other co-morbidities,may find they are quoted really high amount for cover even if it a short trip to visit family and friends. So no cover ,and no travel is effectively what we will all have to decide. How much a year would this cost to the average family in good health ,who intend to visit their families over for example a Christmas period, and maybe the odd weekend jaunt .? Wonder what others think about the huge repercussions for those who are not currently covered by private medical plans through their Employer? www.thisisjersey.com/2009/03/03/health-agreement-with-uk-to-end-next-month/

One solution don't go to the UK then you can't get caught out. I blame the States for this, they have had long enough to sort this out but have left it till the last minute as per usual. I know of quite a few elderly people worried sick about visiting relatives in the Uk now. So much for a caring considerate government!

It is very worrying for anyone wishing to visit the UK for any reason and is going to drive travel costs even higher than the current extortionate rates.

Has anyone else seen any adverts yet for this sort of insurance policy ? Was under the impression that we would be bombarded with companies providing this sort of policy .To date can't recall seeing anything advertised. Will be interestign to hear the first casualty of these new arrangements. Bound to be people travelling over the Easter holidays who have not got cover, both here at our Aand E department ,and for local residents who are on the mainland .

I spoke with Rossborough recently re travel insurance cover for one of my daughters who has a medical condition and was advised that the insurance companies will be bringing out new policies shortly so they advise not to taken anything out longterm for the moment but wait to see what the insurance companies come up with. In the meantime it's not too expensive to take out single trip cover but probably depends on the severity of your medical condition and how often you've been hospitalised. Be very careful of the small print as many insurance policies stipulate you have to stay in a hotel in the UK for at least 2 nights - not much use for one night stopovers in transit or if you're staying with friends.
