Simple debate - who is the greatest Jerseyman or woman, living or dead, and nobody better say Peter Mac.
I think really they should be Jersey-born - rather than simply having once visited a great aunty in Jersey while stopping off on the way to France (or any of the other spurious reasons why anybody even remotely famous gets labelled as a 'local' these days). So, for example, that well-known Jerseyman Kyran Bracken, does not count: born in Ireland, brought up in Liverpool. And, before I get any more comfy in the saddle of my high horse, I'll stop there. ;D
Having said that, perhaps there can be special exceptions for long-standing residents who have brought something unique to the island.
There will be a special prize for whoever guesses the person I'm thinking about.

Will be interesting how History is written with regard to Stuart and this period of Island Life. History tends to be written by Establishment figures and the ruling classes, with the rise of Internet commentaries,which does show a contrary view point,hopefully will have a more balanced picture in the future for our ancestors. I read somewhere that every thing posted on the net is documented for research ,like a library of internet material . Books will not be the medium of the future,so storing web pages makes sense. Not sure if is not the British Library that now catalogues the Internet as well.

Greatest Jersey person mmmmm ,bit thin on the ground compared to elsewhere. Perhaps Millais,Blampied,Lily Langtry. We have not produced many film stars, writers,singers or poets,philosophers,or revolutionaries or reformers. Could there be a reason for this,the nature of the place?

Harry Patterson (jack Higgins) Mind you Chris Bright and Rob Shipley for their contribution to to fictional literature should get a mention.
Stuart Goddard (Adam Ant) don't think he's a great Jersey person, just wanted to appear a little clever by knowing his real name.
Frank Harrison Walker should be in the running but it depends on what catagories there are!!

Do you think we can squeeze in Lawrence of Arabia and Kenneth Moore on the technicality of them having spent periods of their childhoods here? Gotta be a safer bet than Adam Ant, surely?! ;D

John Charles Elton Le Mesurier De Somerys Halliley is not the greatest Jerseyman for two reasons;
1) His rubbish beer adverts in the 70's (for Randalls I think) 2) Tho' his family were from Alderney, he was born in Bedford.

Get out of it. OK, first clue... it is a 'he' and he was born in Jersey.
(By the way, before we go any further, this is just my personal opinion about who is the greatest Jerseyman)

First mention for Harry Vardon, nice. But no - I'm not a big golf fan. (And it's not myself, thanks!...)

Adam Ant? Denny Laine? Are you people just using this as a form of therapy, exposing your embarassing childhood musical tastes?! Nobody's said Graham Le Saux yet.

Not the best known crapaud, Philip Carteret was, in his time, a genuine British hero ~ his circumnavigation in Swallow was an incredible accomplishment. The two volume account of his trip published by the Hakluyt Society www.hakluyt.com/ is well worth a read. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_CarteretCheers, VStA
